Wolf Haines Winter Training Programme 2009/10
Winter Break from University doesn't mean I can escape my training programme.

This is a blog of my day-to-day endeavours as i adapt to training away from University.
Training Day 16
by wolfhaines Jan 5th 2010
Well I am fully recovered from the half marathon distance run two days ago.
Decided to revert back to my high intensity 3.32 mile run. I had been dragging the time down by about 4-5minutes each time I had attempted this run. Starting at 40minutes (In combat boots and heavy snow) and now being on 26minutes (Very icy conditions, but still in trainers)

What I had realised was that because I only run at night (unless accompanied), the temperature on this occasion had dropped to -6! I am bit of a fan of colder conditions, often walking around in shorts in mid winter. My natural body temperature allows me to keep warm, but also means I overheat very very easily in normal conditions.

The previous lowest temperature for a run was -4, which being human, the hardships of that run had faded from my memory and replaced with the satisfaction of completing it. I set out at a good pace, completing the first mile in a steady 7 minutes. Unfortunately, however, my muscles were not coping with the cold as well as I had hoped, meaning they were getting cold even during the run, and I couldn't exert the usual performance. None-the-less I continued, adamant that I could still beat my 26minutes time. By the time I had reached 2 miles my throat was burning from the cold and my lungs were not coping well with the cold temperatures and I felt like I was winded at some points.

This was the point when I put my health before my determination and called it a day, I did a steady walk back home (which was only about 500 metres away, as my route passes close by my house a couple of times.). Unable to breathe as fast as I needed to in these conditions, feeling sick, having a headache and with my sweat starting to freeze on my shirt I knew I had made the right decision. I arrived home happy and safe- and ready for my training session with my Sports Scientist tomorrow!
